Published by Fontaines DC: Bug (2024)

Line of Events

Bailey lives with his older brother Hunter and single-parent father Bug in a squat in North Kent. Bogar doesn’t have much time for them. Bailey looks elsewhere for attention and adventure. Barry Keoghan left Gladiator II (2024) to star in this film instead. Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to screen the film Bird at Newfest at the SVA Theatre, and it left an indelible mark on me, an experience that makes it easy to see why Andrea Arnold remains one of our most distinctive and courageous filmmakers.

Barry Keoghan plays Bailey’s father and is as captivating as ever

Arnold, whose works such as Fish Tank and American Honey have long depicted the fragile and bruised fringes of society, once again offers a deeply moving exploration of youth and its collision with the harsh reality of the adult world. Nykiya Adams is absolutely stunning as Bailey, a resourceful teenager trying to make sense of the world around her while living on the outskirts of Kent, England. His performance is a revelation, full of subtlety, grace and the kind of honesty that almost feels like a documentary in its authenticity. Through Bailey’s unblemished gaze, we are confronted with a world that is both brutal and shocking, but Arnold ensures that moments of tenderness and wonder permeate the darkness. Adams has created a character who is not simply a victim of her circumstances, but one who finds beauty and resilience in spite of them.

In many ways, her character symbolizes the fractured state of authority Bailey faces

Depicting a man entangled in shady dealings and moral ambiguity, the charm and menace pile up in equal measure. Keoghan’s ability to oscillate between warmth and cold detachment keeps the audience on their toes as he plays a character he’s supposed to protect but ends up as lost as the child he’s trying to care for. Franz Rogowski also gives a standout performance, bringing a quiet intensity to the role of an enigmatic figure who towers over society and occasionally offers glimpses of humanity amidst the desolation. The essence of Bird Andrea Arnold: a visceral, captivating dive into the lives of characters living on the fringes of society. The camerawork is as restless as Bailey herself, moving with an urgency that brings us directly into her experiences.

Arnold has always been good at portraying complex and contradictory emotions, and Madár is no exception

Arnold’s handheld cinematography heightens the sense of instability and danger, but there’s also an intimacy in the way he frames Bailey’s interactions with the world, reminding us that magic can be found even in the most unexpected places. The film’s visual language is stunning in its ability to capture the beauty and decay of Bailey’s world. What really stands out about Bird is her ability to balance two seemingly contradictory feelings: that of hope and the ever-present weight of despair. The film is able to capture the disturbing and hopeful aspects of the environment with empathy and wit. The narrative focuses less on presenting a pure plot and more on creating an emotional tapestry, a mood piece that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit.

Bird resonates because he refuses to give easy answers

An almost Roger Ebert-esque appreciation for the small moments, the fleeting beauty that reminds us why we watch movies in the first place. Instead, Arnold immerses us in a fragmented but deeply real world, one that reflects the uncertainties of Bailey’s life and her unwavering determination to find her place in it. There’s a certain poeticness to the way Arnold captures his characters, not through big speeches or melodramatic moments, but through the silences, glances, and everyday details that add up to something deeply human.
